To coincide with Earth Hour 2010 the Anglican Church at Ashfield, St John’s will turn out the lights in its regular Sunday evening service.
Held on Sunday, March 28, the environmentally-friendly evening has been dubbed ‘Earth Church’.
“We want to celebrate the world that God has created and show our commitment to caring for and protecting it,” said church member and organiser Meredith Walker.
“We are planning to use no electricity at all in the service – the lights will be out, music will be acoustic and if the weather is good we will meet outside.”
“We’ve also encouraged regular church members to consider walking to
church that week.”
Earth Church will include a specific prayer time for current environmental
issues.
“With millions of people stopping to think about our responsibility for the environment that weekend, we wanted to join our local community in thinking about and discussing this important issue.”
The evening will conclude with an environmentally friendly supper made up of organic, animal friendly and fair trade foods.
All members of the community are invited.
Earth Church will be held on Sunday 28 March, 6pm-8pm at St John’s Anglican Church, 81 Alt St Ashfield.
